What to expect staying in a hostel: Tips and tricks

Introduction

Hostel may be a word you’ve never heard of in terms of traveling, or maybe you’ve only heard it in the context of horror movies. I’m here to clear things up and introduce you to the wonderful, well-known secret of hostels. I’ll share what to expect on your first hostel visit and how to maximize and enjoy your stay. Having stayed in hostels in the United States and abroad, I can attest to their unique charm. Typically, Americans do not stay in hostels unless they are traveling in another country, as hostel culture isn’t as prominent in the U.S. due to its vast landscapes and lack of backpackable territories. However, if you ever get the opportunity to stay in one, it’s an experience unlike many others.

What is a Hostel?

A hostel is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as an establishment that provides inexpensive food and lodging for a specific group of people, such as students, workers, or travelers. The word hostel comes from the Latin hospitale meaning “inn, large house.” Typically, younger people stay in hostels, but there are hostels for a variety of different groups. Whether you want a laid-back atmosphere or a lively party scene, there’s a hostel for you. One of the main reasons I enjoy hostels is the opportunity to socialize with other travelers and participate in group activities.

Most hostels typically take on the dorm room style, varying in bed numbers depending on the establishment. Some rooms can have four beds, while others might have up to sixteen. Some hostels also offer private rooms, but these tend to be scarce and sell out quickly. Bathrooms can be en-suite or communal; this is something I always check before deciding where to stay. For example, a dorm with 16 beds but only one en-suite bathroom might lead to frequent wait times and cleanliness issues.

Why Should I Stay in a Hostel?

You may be wondering why choose a hostel over a hotel, Airbnb, or couch surfing. Here are a few reasons:

  1. Affordability: The main reason most people stay in hostels is the price. Hostels cater to younger crowds who may not have a lot of funds but still want to experience the world. Staying in a hostel allows you to see and do everything you want without breaking the bank.
  2. Meeting New People: Hostels are a great place to meet new people. As a solo traveler, I appreciate having people to talk to at the end of the day. Sharing experiences and memories with random strangers can be surprisingly rewarding. Hostels attract travelers from all around the world, bringing together people with varying opinions, beliefs, and thoughts.
  3. Laid-Back Atmosphere: Hostels are more laid-back and less formal than typical hotels. They often have unique designs and cohesive themes. The social interactions in this relaxed atmosphere can lead to lifelong friendships or simply enhance your travel experience.

How to Find the Perfect Hostel

I use the app Hostelworld for all my hostel bookings because it’s simple and reliable. Occasionally, I use Booking.com, but it can be confusing since it also features hotels and apartments. Here are some tips for finding the perfect hostel:

  1. Book in Advance: Especially during the summer season, booking hostels in advance is crucial. While you might find a hostel at the last minute, your options may be limited.
  2. Read Reviews and Ratings: Pay attention to both positive and negative reviews. Hostelworld dates reviews, so you can see which ones are still relevant. Some hostels offer freebies or incentives for positive reviews, so take each review with a grain of salt.
  3. Consider the Atmosphere: If you’re traveling for work, you might prefer a quieter hostel, while party hostels are great for those looking to go out. The atmosphere can usually be gauged through reviews and photos.
  4. Location Matters: Most hostels are located in city centers close to transportation and restaurants. However, ensure the area suits your preferences. Just because a hostel is near nightlife doesn’t mean it’s in a convenient or safe location.

Common Hostel Amenities

Hostels offer a range of amenities, though they can vary. Here are some common ones:

  1. Kitchens: Most hostels have kitchens, though I rarely cook while traveling as I prefer to experience local cuisine. Some hostels even offer cooking classes or group meals.
  2. Laundry Facilities: Not every hostel will have washing machines, but they often provide ways to wash your clothes, either through a service or by hand. If you use the machines, expect a fee for soap and use.
  3. Security: Most hostels offer secure storage for your belongings, like lockers or cupboards. I always travel with a lock for added security. The locks I use are The Fosmon TSA Accepted Cable Luggage Locks (Amazon) and they haven’t failed me yet.

What to Bring to a Hostel

Hostels offer many amenities, but bringing your own personal items can enhance your stay:

  1. Shower Slippers: Shared showers can be less than pristine, so having a barrier between your feet and the floor is reassuring.
  2. Toiletries: Bring your own toiletries such as shower gel, deodorant, and toothpaste, as hostels may not provide them.
  3. Travel Sheets: I like to bring my own travel sheets for added comfort and hygiene. Hostels clean their sheets, but having my own makes me feel better. I use thin, compact travel sheets from Amazon that allow me to wrap myself up like a burrito.

Personal Experience

My first time staying in a hostel was in Dallas, Texas. I needed a place to stay before a Spartan race the next day and decided to try a hostel after hearing about them on social media. It turned out to be a lot of fun, and I knew hostel life was going to be a part of my solo travels. My favorite hostel so far has been Lost Inn Lisbon. The rooms were clean, the bathrooms were spotless, and I met a fantastic group of people. It’s experiences like these that make hostel stays memorable and worthwhile.
